Teen Suicide – A Dark Reality

It is not unlikely that you have all heard about a teen that killed his or herself. In fact, in a Canadian survey that took place in 1999 by Stats Canada, suicide was the leading cause of death for teens between the ages of 14-19 years old. This cause of death came second to car accidents.

Why do people kill themselves?

It is truly such a waste for someone to kill themself. All they are doing is being selfish by finding the quickest way out of a small problem, while leaving their friends and family to suffer and be miserable. Maybe that is what they wanted though. People kill themselves for so many different reasons that probably make no sense to other people, because the person who wanted to die was so full of grief and sadness, that their entire world became distorted. They didn’t see things from a clear angle like other people do. In deep need of some teen advice, they only wanted one thing… to get out.

What are the signs?

It doesn’t matter what anyone says, there really aren’t any true signs unless you know the person inside and out. More common symptoms are people who:

* Talk about wishing they were dead
* Become withdrawn from things they used to enjoy
* Refuse to be complimented
* Talk negatively about themselves

Of course, this is not always the case. In fact, some people hide their wishes to die very well. They may not tell anybody they want to die. They might start acting more nice to everybody and maybe even leave them some gifts or do something extremely nice for their closer friends or family before they plan on killing themself. As you can see, it’s very hard to tell when someone actually will kill themself, and often when they do, it is a major shock.

Is there any way to prevent it?

You might be able to prevent a close family member or friend from ending their life by always being supportive, and making sure you talk to them about the value of life. It doesn’t matter what their religious beliefs are – there is only one you. The best teen advice is to keep in mind that if you do not like yourself, what do you think ending your life will do? It will put an end to you, but leave people that do care about you to suffer. There is always a solution to every problem, and we all feel that we hate ourself at some point in our life. There is always room for change, especially when you are a young teen! I cannot stress enough how much people change from the time they are 16 to when they reach age 24 or 25! All your thoughts, interests, attitudes, behavior, everything will change and you’ll probably have a whole new outlook on life. Anytime someone close to you suggests killing themself, remind them that there is always a better alternate solution. No human is better than any other. We are all biological beings that deserve to live and be happy. If you are feeling suicidal, if you want to end your life, you should seek counseling or write in a journal to express your feelings and to try and understand them. You have a distorted view of yourself and of life. It can easily be fixed, and you will feel happy again, soon my friend.
